Ankle Sprain

An ankle sprain occurs when the ankle unexpectedly turns, causing damage to the ligaments of the foot and ankle. The direction of the turn can affect varying ligaments, muscles and bones of the ankle and foot. Ankle sprains are commonly accompanied by swelling, bruising and pain with weight bearing or range of motion. Depending on the degree of damage, ankle sprains categorized into grades 1-3. Left untreated, ankle sprains can produce ongoing stiffness, pain and instability.

Signs and Symptoms:

·       Pain, swelling and bruising after turning the ankle

·       Difficulty bearing weight

·       Pain with ankle range of motion

·       Stiffness at the ankle
