Disc Injuries

The disc is a cartilaginous structure that is wedged between two boney vertebrae. It acts as a cushion and shock absorber for the spine when we lift heavy objects, jump, or experience trauma. Think of the disc like a jelly filled donut. When there is too much stress placed on it the jelly will come out; this can also occur in a disc injury when too much stress is put on the spine. These injuries can be caused by lifting too much weight with improper form, trauma such as a car accident, or simply reaching down to pick up something off the floor. Manual therapy and specific exercises can often be an effective alternative to surgical intervention in these injuries.
