Shin Splints

Shin splints, also known as medial tibial stress syndrome, are an injury often seen in runners and dancers. Some risk factors for shin splints include prolonged repetitive exercise on hard surfaces, increased exercise intensity over a short period of time, weakness in the ankles and arches of the foot. Shin splints are mechanically caused by repetitive stress on the tibia (shin bone) and surrounding muscular attachments. These injuries if left untreated can lead to tibial stress fractures.

Signs and Symptoms:

·       Pain along the inside of the shin or lower leg

·       Pain with exercise and repetitive activity

·       Swelling or tenderness along the shine

·       Pain with plantar and dorsiflexion of the feet
