Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

The thoracic outlet is a space in the front of the shoulder and lower neck that houses many blood vessels, nerves, and arteries giving movement and sensation to the arms. Compression of these structures is the primary cause of Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). Several risk factors are associated with TOS such as obesity, poor posture, desk work and repetitive stress to the shoulder, namely overhead sports and lifting.

Signs and Symptoms:

 •       Pain in the neck, shoulders and upper extremities

•       Cold hands

•       Arm and shoulder pain/numbness while lifting or reaching overhead

•       Arm weakness

•       Numbness and tingling in the arms and hands
