Iliotibial Band Syndrome

The iliotibial band (IT band) is a band of fibrous connective tissue on the outside of the knee running laterally up the thigh and into the hip. It works in conjunction with the quadriceps, lateral hamstring, glutes, and hip flexors to stabilize the knees and outer hips. IT band syndrome is most common in cyclists, runners, and other endurance athletes. The IT band can become irritated while it acts to stabilize the hips and knees during repetitive activities. Many athletes can relate to the sensitivity of the IT band while foam rolling or stretching the area. This is due to muscle tightness or decreased flexibility in the thighs and buttocks. Pain often occurs when going downstairs or getting up from a seated position.
