Osgood-Schlatter Disease

Osgood-Schlatter disease occurs in adolescents and causes pain at the front of the knee, below the knee cap. This is often found in active adolescents and can be exacerbated by growth spurts. Tight muscles pull up on the quadricep tendon where it attaches to the growth plate at the top of the tibia. This repetitive stress causes micro tears in the cartilage and over time can cause a bony knot at the top of the shin.

Signs and symptoms:

 ·       Increased pain with activity alleviated by rest

·       Swelling below the kneecap

·       Tender, bony knot below the kneecap
