Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain

The sacroiliac joint is the area of the low back where the pelvic bones meet the sacrum. The Sacrum bone is shaped like an upside-down triangle that wedges between the two large pelvic bones and is the keystone of the entire upper and lower extremities. There can be a great deal of force and stress put on the sacroiliac joint for individuals who sit for long periods of time, weightlifters, cyclists, runners, and pregnant women/new mothers. Pain can be deep and achy on across the entire low back or just isolated to one side. Targeted exercises to stabilize the hips and core can improve pain associated with an injury to the sacroiliac joint.

Signs and Symptoms:

 ·       Low back pain that can be localized to one or both sides

·       Pain while laying on side

·       Pain with hip extension and rotation

·       Low back pain while sitting or leaning backward
