De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

Sometimes referred to as "mother's thumb", De Quervain's commonly affects pregnant women and those who lift or hold children often however it can affect anyone including desk workers and others who perform repetitive wrist movements. This occurs when inflammation around the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist become inflamed. These tendons are protected by a sheath, think of it like a string inside a straw. When this inflammation also spreads to the tendon sheath it is categorized as "tenosynovitis" and can be a very limiting and painful condition.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Pain with lifting or holding objects

  • Pain when tilting your wrist toward the pinky side

  • Swelling

  • Clicking or catching with thumb movements

  • Pain when writing or holding a pencil
